The past continuous tense
കഴിഞ്ഞു പോയകാലത്ത് ഒരു വ്യക്തമായ കാലയളവിൽ തുടർന്ന് കൊണ്ടിരുന്ന ഒരു കാര്യം പറയുന്നതിന് വേണ്ടിയാണ് past continuous tense ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്.
ഒരു ഉദാഹരണം നോക്കാം 
I was watching  a  movie on TV yesterday evening (ഞാൻ ഇന്നലെ വൈകുന്നേരം ടീവി യിൽ ഒരു സിനിമ കണ്ടുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.)
ഇവിടെ "കണ്ടുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു"എന്ന വാക്കിൽ  നിന്നും ആ കാര്യം പൂർണമായി എന്നും,അത് കുറച്ചു സമയം നീണ്ടു നിന്നിരുന്ന ഒരു കാര്യം ആയിരുന്നു എന്നും മനസിലാക്കാം. 
(The past continuous tense is used to talk about actions or events that were going on around a particular point of time in the past)

Form: Subject + was / were + ing form of the verb.
He was playing 
They were watching
subject ഏകവചനമാണെങ്കിൽ was എന്നും ബഹുവചനമാണെങ്കിൽ were എന്നും ചേർക്കുന്നു.

Affirmative sentence 
She was reading(അവൾ വായിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു)

Negative sentence 
She wasn't reading(അവൾ വായിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നില്ലേ)

Interrogative sentence 
Was she reading?(അവൾ വായിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുവായിരുന്നോ?)

Interrogative negative sentence  
Wasn't she reading?(അവൾ വായിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുവാരുന്നില്ലേ?)

 FUNCTIONS OF THE PAST CONTINUOUS
(Past continuous tense ന്റെ ഉപയോഗം)
1 .കഴിഞ്ഞു പോയ കാലത് നടന്ന ഒരു സംഭവo അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഒരു കഥ ഭൂതകാലത്തിൽ (past tense )പറയുകയോ ,എഴുതുകയോ ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ ചുറ്റുപാടു o സംഭവിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങൾ പറയുന്നതിന്  past continuous ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു 


 e.g. "The sun was shining and birds were singing as the elephant came out the jungle. The other animals were relaxing in the shade of the trees, but the elephant moved very quickly.

(ആന കാട്ടിൽ നിന്നും പുറത്തേക്ക് വന്നപ്പോൾ സൂര്യൻ പ്രകാശിച്ചു നിൽക്കുകയും പക്ഷികൾ പാട്ടുപാടുകയും ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു .മറ്റു മൃഗങ്ങൾ മരത്തണലിൽ വിശ്രമിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു ,പക്ഷെ ആന വളരെ വേഗത്തിൽ മുന്നോട്ടു പോയി.)

2 .ഭൂതകാലത്തിൽ നടന്നുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന പൂർണ്ണമാകാത്ത  ഒരുകാര്യം,അത് മറ്റൊരു കാര്യം സംഭവിച്ചത് കൊണ്ട് തടസപ്പെട്ടു.അത്തരം സന്ദർഭങ്ങൾ വിവരിക്കാൻ past continuous ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.

(to describe an unfinished action that was interrupted by another event or action)

e.g. "I was having a beautiful dream when the alarm clock rang."(അലാറം അടിച്ചപ്പോൾ ഞാൻ നല്ല സുന്ദരമായ ഒരു സ്വപ്നത്തിലായിരുന്നു),
ഇവിടെ അലാറം അടിച്ചത് കൊണ്ട് സ്വപ്നം തടസ്സപെട്ടു , സ്വപ്നം പൂര്ണമായിട്ടില്ല.)

   മറ്റൊരു കാരണത്താൽ ആ സമയത്ത്‌,പൂർണ്ണമാക്കപ്പെടാത്ത ഭൂതകാല സംഭവങ്ങൾ past continuousൽ  പറയുമ്പോൾ,അതിനു തടസമായി വന്ന കാര്യങ്ങൾ simple past tense ആണ് പറയുന്നത്.
I was making(past continuous) dinner when she arrived (simple past tense).
(അവൾ വന്നപ്പോൾ ഞാൻ അത്താഴം ഉണ്ടാക്കുകയായിരുന്നു)- അവൾ വന്ന സമയം അത്താഴം ഉണ്ടാക്കി കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ല,അത് തടസ്സപ്പെട്ടു).

3."നീ എന്തുചെയ്യുകയായിരുന്നു" എന്ന ചോദ്യം ചോദിക്കുന്നതിനു past continuous tense  സംഭാഷണത്തിൽ വളരെയധികം ഉപയോഗിക്കാറുണ്ട്.
eg :-
What were you doing at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon?ഇന്നലെ ഉച്ചക്കുതിരിഞ്ഞു 4 മണിക്ക് നീ എന്തുചെയ്യുകയായിരുന്നു?
 I was playing with my dog.ഞാനെന്റെ നായയുമായി കളിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.

What was he doing in the garden? അവൻ പൂന്തോട്ടത്തിൽ എന്ത് ചെയ്യുകയായിരുന്നു ?

He was watering the plants.(അവൻ ചെടികൾ നനക്കുകയായിരുന്നു?

4 .ഒരേ സമയം നടന്ന രണ്ടു കാര്യങ്ങൾ സൂചിപ്പിക്കാൻ Past Continuous ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.മുകളിൽ പറഞ്ഞ അതെ ഉപയോഗം തന്നെയാണ് ഇവിടെയെയും)

They were waiting for the bus when the accident happened.(അപകടം നടന്ന സമയത് അവർ ബസ് കാത്ത് നിൽക്കുക യായിരുന്നു)
Past Continuous ൽ  While , When എന്നിവയുടെ ഉപയോഗം
രണ്ടു കാര്യങ്ങൾ ഒരേ സമയം നടന്നത് കാണിക്കാൻ  While ,When എന്നിവ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.(അപ്പോൾ,അതേസമയം എന്ന അർത്ഥമാണ് While ,When എന്നിവയ്ക്ക് വരുന്നത്)

Past tense ൽ  ഒരേ സമയം നടന്ന രണ്ടു  കാര്യങ്ങൾ  പറയുമ്പോൾ,when നു ശേഷം എപ്പോളും simple past ആവും വരുക,എന്നാൽ while നു ശേഷം past continuous ആണ് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്.

Examples: 
I was studying when she called.
(അവൾ വിളിച്ചപ്പോൾ ഞാൻ പഠിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു)

While I was studying, she called
(ഞാൻ പഠിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നപ്പോൾ അവൾ വിളിച്ചു)

ഇവിടെ രണ്ട്‌ വാചകങ്ങളുടെയും അർഥം ഒന്ന് തന്നെയാണ് എന്നാൽ ഒരു വാചകത്തിൽ "പഠിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു "എന്ന കാര്യത്തിന് പ്രാധാന്യം  കിട്ടുന്നു ,മറ്റേതിൽ "അവൾ വിളിച്ചു"എന്ന കാര്യത്തിന്  പ്രാധാന്യം വരുന്നു.


പലപ്പോഴും  simple past tense ഉം past continuous tense ഉം ഒരുമിച്ചു ഉപയോഗിക്കാറുണ്ട്.ഭൂതകാലത്തിൽ കുറച്ചു നീണ്ടുനിന്ന കാര്യം,അല്ലെങ്കിൽ സാഹചര്യം എന്നിവ  പറയാൻ past continuous ഉം,ഭൂതകാലത്തിൽ പെട്ടെന്ന് പൂർത്തിയായ  ഒരു പ്രവർത്തിയെയോ,സംഭവത്തെയോ കുറിച്ച് പറയാൻ  simple past  ഉം ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.

When I woke up this morning it was raining (ഞാൻ രാവിലെ എഴുന്നേറ്റപ്പോൾ മഴ പെയ്യുകയായിരുന്നു)

I was playing (past continuous) a computer game when the doorbell rang (simple past).(ഡോർബെൽ അടിച്ചപ്പോൾ ഞാൻ കമ്പ്യൂട്ടർ ഗെയിം കളിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.
(ഡോർബെൽ അടിച്ച സമയത്ത് എന്തുണ്ടായി എന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ചാണ് നമ്മൾ പറയുന്നത് ,ആ സമയം കളിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു)


Note: സാധാരണയായി  continuous form ൽ ഉപയോഗിക്കാത്ത verbs(static verbs ), past continuous tense ലും ഉപയോഗിക്കാറില്ല അത്തരം സാഹചര്യങ്ങളിൽ the simple past ആണ് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്.
I was loving him (wrong)
I loved him (ഞാൻ അവനെ സ്നേഹിച്ചിരുന്നു)

കൂടാതെ arrive എന്ന verb ന്റെ past  continuous ഉപയോഗിക്കാറില്ല.
At noon, he was arriving.(wrong)
At noon, he arrived .(true)

While she was sleeping, someone took her phone.
I was making dinner when he arrived at my house this evening.
What was Sam doing yesterday evening? Sam was watching a movie on TV.
What was Maria doing yesterday? Maria was reading some books.
What were the children doing in the evening? The children were playing in the park.
What were you doing when the guests turned up? I was working in the garage.
