കഴിഞ്ഞു പോയ കാലത്തിൽ സംഭവിച്ച കാര്യങ്ങൾ പറയുന്നതിനാണ് past tense(ഭൂതകാലം) ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്.ഭൂതകാലത്തിൽ ആരംഭിക്കുകയും ഭൂതകാലത്തിൽ തന്നെ അവസാനിക്കുകയും ചെയ്ത ഒരു പ്രവർത്തി ഏറ്റവും ലളിതമായ രീതിയിൽ സൂചിപ്പിക്കാൻ simple past tense (സാമാന്യഭൂതകാലം) ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.
(The simple past tense is used to describe a completed activity that happened in the past. In other words, it started in the past and ended in the past)
eg:-It rained yesterday.(ഇന്നലെ മഴ പെയ്തു)
Ann watched TV all night.(ആൻ രാത്രി മുഴുവൻ ടി വി കണ്ടു)
Simple past tense രൂപം ചെയ്യുന്ന രീതി.
Subject +past form of verb
He +played - അവൻ കളിച്ചു.
Subject ഏകവചനമാണെങ്കിലും ബഹുവചനമാണെങ്കിലും verb ഒന്ന്തന്നെയാണ്.Simple present ൽ വേണ്ടതുപോലെ കർത്താവ് singular ആണെങ്കിൽ verb ന്റെ കൂടെ "s" ചേർക്കേണ്ട ആവശ്യം ഇല്ല.
Regular verb ആണ് എങ്കിൽ Verb ന്റെ past രൂപം കിട്ടണമെങ്കിൽ,base verb നോട് കൂടി ed ചേർക്കുക.
("-ed" ചേർത്ത് past ഉം past participle ഉം വരുന്ന verb കളെ "regular verbs" എന്ന് പറയുന്നു.)
eg ;-play - played-played, ask -asked -asked
"-ed" ചേർത്ത് വരാത്ത verb കളെ " Irregular Verbs" എന്ന് പറയുന്നു

Negative sentence (Simple past ന്റെ നെഗറ്റീവ് വാചകം ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നതിനു ,main verb നു മുൻപിൽ "did "എന്ന auxiliary verb+"not" ചേർക്കുന്നു.
Subject + did not + base form of verb
He didn't ask ,they didn't say.
(Simple present tense ൽ negative വാചകങ്ങളിൽ "don't and doesn't "ആയിരുന്നു ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നത്)
Present: You don't need a mechanic.(നിനക്കൊരു മെക്കാനിക്കിന്റെ ആവശ്യം ഇല്ല)
Past: You didn't need a mechanic.(നിനക്കൊരു മെക്കാനിക്കിന്റെ ആവശ്യം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല)
Present: He doesn't speak Japanese.(അവൻ ജാപ്പനീസ് സംസാരിക്കില്ല)
Past: He didn't speak Japnese.(അവൻ ജാപ്പനീസ് സംസാരിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല)
Interrogative sentence-
Simple past tense ൽ ചോദ്യങ്ങൾ "did "എന്ന auxiliary verb ൽ തുടങ്ങുന്നു.
Did + subject + base form of verb ?
Did he ask ?
(ഓർക്കുക present tense ൽ do or does ആണ് ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നത്)
Present: Do you need a doctor?(നിനക്കൊരു ഡോക്ടറുടെ ആവശ്യമുണ്ടോ?)
Past: Did you need a doctor?(നിനക്കൊരു ഡോക്ടറുടെ ആവശ്യം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നോ?)
Present: Do you ride your bike to work?(നീ ബൈക്കിലാണോ ജോലിക്കു പോകുന്നത് ?)
Past: Did you ride your bike to work?(നീ ബൈക്കിലാണോ ജോലിക്കു പോയിരുന്നത്?)
Present: Does he live in Italy?അവൻ ഇറ്റലിയിൽ ആണോ താമസിക്കുന്നത്?)
Past: Did he live in Italy?(അവൻ ഇറ്റലിയിൽ താമസിച്ചിരുന്നോ?)
Simple past tense ന്റെ ഉപയോഗം
ഭൂതകാലത്തിൽ നടന്ന സംഭവത്തെക്കുറിച്ചു പറയാനാണ് Simple past ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത് എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു.അതുകൊണ്ടു തന്നെ Simple past ഉപയോഗിക്കുമ്പോൾ കഴിഞ്ഞുപോയ കാര്യം നടന്ന സമയത്തിനെകുറിച്ചു വ്യക്തമായ സൂചന കൊടുക്കുന്ന വാക്കുകൾ(adverbs)കൂടി അതോടൊപ്പം ചേർത്ത് പറയാറുണ്ട്.
eg :-yesterday, last week, a month ago,in 2010,this morning, one year ago, when I was a child, when I lived in -, at that moment, that day, one day, Friday etc.
He went to the club last night.(ഇന്നലെ രാത്രി അവൻ ക്ലബ്ബിൽ പോയി)
He didn't go to the club last night.(ഇന്നലെ രാത്രി അവൻ ക്ലബ്ബിൽ പോയില്ല)
Did he go to the club last night?(ഇന്നലെ രാത്രി അവൻ ക്ലബ്ബിൽ പോയിരുന്നോ?
My parents came to visit me last July.(എന്റെ മാതാപിതാക്കൾ കഴിഞ്ഞ ജൂലൈയിൽ എന്നെ കാണാൻ വന്നിരുന്നു)
Did he come to your party last week?(കഴിഞ്ഞ ആഴ്ച അവൻ പാർട്ടിക്ക് വന്നിരുന്നോ?)
